“It’s pure misinformation. I have never shot at a civilian or prisoner,” Dzeko told his war crimes trial in Sarajevo on Tuesday.

Dzeko, a former member of the Bosnian Army’s Zulfikar detachment, is charged with taking part in the execution of civilians and imprisoned fighters from the Croatian Defence Council, along with other members of his unit, on April 16, 1993.

He insisted that he did not kill an elderly couple, as claimed in the indictment.

He also said that Nihad Bojadzic, the deputy commander of the Zulfikar detachment, did not issue an order before the attack on Trusina that “no one must stay alive”.

According to Dzeko, Bosnian Army troops went into action on the morning of April 16 after their foes opened fire first.

“The Croatian Defence Council started shooting, so ours returned fire,” he said.

The defendant said that he was with a smaller group of soldiers who searched houses in Trusina.

“In a house we found an elderly couple. We left them alone,” he said.

Dzeko, who is also charged with committing war crimes in Jablanica, will resume his testimony on January 17.
